DIVING ACCIDENTS

What causes a diving injury?

Nearly 1,000 spinal cord injuries occur each year due to shallow-water diving. Close to one-third of these accidents occur at home in either above- or below-ground pools. Most diving injuries occur as the head impacts the bottom or side of the pool or strikes a concealed, underwater object, causing the spine to dislocate or fracture. The vulnerable spinal cord, which is protected by the spine, can become bruised, swollen, or torn as a result of this trauma. Swimming pool injuries may occur as a result of improperly designed or constructed pools, a failure to maintain the swimming pool and swimming area, and/or a lack of adequate barrier fencing. Alcohol consumption is involved in about 50% of diving related spinal cord injuries.
